Court code

Your DMV court code

Every California traffic court has a five-digit DMV court code. The code carries your completion to your case, so it has to match the building that holds the case.

Tulare County Superior Court hears adult traffic in two buildings, and each has its own code on the Tulare list that the court's traffic page links. Code 54490 is the Visalia Division at the County Civic Center, and code 54465 is the South County Justice Center in Porterville. Cases whose numbers begin with VTR or VJT belong to Visalia, and cases that begin with PTR or PJT belong to Porterville.

Before the final exam, Mirai Traffic School asks you to confirm your court and its code. Pick the building your case number points to, not the one nearest your home.

Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

Your citation or Reminder Notice gives the date to appear or pay, and the notice says whether your case needs a mandatory appearance. When you call or visit a clerk, the court asks you to have your citation number ready and the Reminder Notice in front of you.

If you cannot find your due date, the court says you may search its records or ask in person at any court location. The court's online services page links its case index search. A case left unresolved by the date on your notice can go to the State Franchise Tax Board or a private collection agency.

The court's traffic page

How to ask for traffic school

Your Reminder Notice gives the due date, and the court's traffic page explains how to ask Tulare County Superior Court for traffic school. The court collects its traffic school fee together with the bail on your Reminder Notice, payable to the Clerk of the Court, Tulare County, and the traffic page shows the current fee. The school you pick charges its own fee on top.

If you sign up by phone or by mail, the court mails you a list of traffic schools. You may mail your payment to any court location, with your citation number written on it. A driver who attends without qualifying still gets the conviction, with no refund.

From citation to certificate in Tulare County

What Tulare County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

The citation names Tulare County Superior Court and gives a date. The court then mails a Reminder Notice with your due date.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

Tulare asks for a valid noncommercial license when cited, a noncommercial vehicle, a moving violation with no alcohol or drugs, no more than one point, and no traffic school for a citation issued in the 18 months before this one. The speed must stay under 100 mph and less than 26 mph over the limit, and any failure to appear charge must be settled or paid in full first.

  3. 3

    You ask the court

Before the due date on your Reminder Notice, ask the court for traffic school and pay its fee with the bail. The court sets both amounts, and your notice and the court's traffic page show them.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The court sets the date you must finish by. For online schools its traffic page points to the California Traffic Safety Institute, whose Tulare list includes Mirai Traffic School, licensed by the DMV as E0756 at $24.99. Miss the court's date and the court keeps your fees and reports a conviction to the DMV.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

The school sends proof of completion to the court. When the court receives it in time, it reports a confidential conviction to the DMV.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about Tulare County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

Read the first letters of your case number. VTR and VJT cases are heard at the County Civic Center in Visalia, and PTR and PJT cases at the South County Justice Center in Porterville.

Yes. Before the due date on your Reminder Notice, call the clerk or go to any clerk's office to schedule an arraignment, with nothing paid up front. If you plead not guilty, the court sets a trial date. To have the arraignment and the trial together, ask before the due date and pay the bail with your request.

A judge, a commissioner or a temporary judge hears it, because infraction cases get no jury. The citing officer is subpoenaed, and you may bring photos, diagrams and other exhibits and subpoena your own witnesses. A not guilty finding returns any bail you paid.

File a request for a continuance with the clerk well before the trial date. A judicial officer decides, and the court tells you by mail. A request filed too late waits until the day of the trial.

Yes, for most infractions that need no mandatory appearance. Before the due date, send the clerk your declaration on form TR-205 with the bail, and you give up the right to appear, testify in person and subpoena witnesses. If the ruling goes against you, ask for a new trial on form TR-220.

Ask Tulare County Superior Court to consider your ability to pay. You can ask in court, in writing on form TR-320, or through the online tool the traffic page links. If you qualify, the court may reduce what you owe.

Proof that the problem is fixed, signed off on the back of the citation or on the courtesy notice by the inspecting officer, with the officer's name, agency and badge number. The court does not accept self-certification. Bring proof by the due date and the court reduces the bail.

Only when your Reminder Notice marks a MANDATORY court appearance. Then you must appear for arraignment before you can pay. The court gives a speed over 100 mph and a driver under 21 with a blood alcohol content of .05 or more as examples.
