Court code

Your DMV court code

Every California traffic court has a five-digit DMV court code, and the code is how your completion finds your case. Your citation and Notice of Bail name the courthouse, and the code belongs to that courthouse.

San Mateo County Superior Court has one adult traffic code, 41470, filed under the Hall of Justice and Records in Redwood City. The Northern Branch in South San Francisco hears the daytime traffic arraignments and trials but has no code of its own on the DMV list, so ask the Traffic Division which code your case carries. Juvenile traffic carries code 41210.

Before the final exam, Mirai Traffic School asks you to confirm your court and its code. Pick the courthouse your notice names.

Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

The court mails a Notice of Bail to the address on the citation. It shows the bail and the payment due date, any proof of correction you need, and traffic school information, and the court asks you to wait for it before you act. By signing the citation, you agreed to respond to it instead of being arrested, so the date on the citation holds even if the notice never comes.

The court names common reasons a notice goes missing: the officer may still have the citation, the DMV may have an old address, the address on the citation may be wrong, or the citation may have gone back to the officer for correction. If yours has not arrived close to the date on the bottom of your citation, call the Traffic Division at (650) 363-4300. The court's traffic page links its case lookup and its traffic school completion information.

The court's traffic page

How to ask for traffic school

Your Notice of Bail explains how to ask for traffic school, and the court's traffic school page describes each way. To ask by mail, fill out the bottom portion of the notice and send it to the Traffic Clerk's Office, 1050 Mission Road, South San Francisco, CA 94080. The court will not let you enroll until you pay the bail and a non-refundable administrative fee, and the notice shows both amounts. With two or more eligible violations, you pay the highest bail plus the fee.

If a fix-it violation is on the same citation, the court must receive proof of correction with your traffic school request. After a request by mail, the court mails the information you need to the address on your notice.

What the court does with your ticket, and what Mirai Traffic School does for you.

From citation to certificate in San Mateo County

What San Mateo County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

The officer's citation carries the date by which you must respond. The court then mails a Notice of Bail to the address on the citation, and that date holds even if the notice never arrives.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

You need a valid California license, no traffic school for a violation in the prior 18 months counted violation date to violation date, no more than 25 mph over the limit, and an eligible infraction. Seat belt, equipment and insurance violations do not qualify, nor does anything above one point, and any failure to appear must be resolved and paid first.

  3. 3

    You pay the court

Pay the total bail and the non-refundable administrative fee before you enroll, as your notice describes. The court sets both amounts.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756, appears on the California Traffic Safety Institute list the court uses, and costs $24.99. The court sets how long you have to finish.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

Schools file completions with the court electronically. If you do not finish by the due date, you lose the bail and the administrative fee you paid.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about San Mateo County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

No. The court warns that depositing the bail through its website forfeits the bail and closes the case. To plead not guilty without appearing, turn in your request, deposit the full bail and waive the time limits for trial, in person or by mail.

Not in San Mateo County. For an infraction, the court must receive your request by the due date, and it says you do not need to post bail. Use the court's form for a formal Trial by Written Declaration, not a letter.

Reserve one by phone with a court clerk at (650) 363-4300. You do not have to deposit bail to ask for an arraignment, or for a court trial at your arraignment.

Bring proof to the Traffic Clerk's Office that you were insured on the citation date, showing the driver's name, the vehicle and the policy dates. The court then clears the insurance charge for a fee on each correctable violation, and the court sets that fee.

Yes. If you were not driving a commercial vehicle you may attend, but the DMV will not keep the conviction confidential, and the court tells you to call DMV Mandatory Actions at (916) 657-6525 after you finish to have the point taken off.

The court may add a civil assessment to the fine and tell the DMV you failed to appear. If you cannot pay, ask the court to consider your ability to pay, or community service in place of the fine.

Interpreters and language help

Ask for a court interpreter well before your hearing so it is not postponed, at the clerk's office, in the courtroom, or by email to the Interpreter Division. The Interpreter Division answers at (650) 261-5023. The court's CTSI school list shows Mirai Traffic School under its Japanese and Russian headings, and Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
