Court code

Your DMV court code

Each California traffic court reports completions under a five-digit DMV court code. Your citation and reminder notice name the courthouse, and the code goes with that courthouse.

San Francisco County Superior Court has one adult traffic code, 38460, filed under the Hall of Justice Traffic Division. Traffic hearings take place at the Civic Center Courthouse, which has no code of its own on the DMV list, so an adult San Francisco ticket uses 38460 unless the clerk tells you otherwise. Juvenile traffic carries code 38200.

Mirai Traffic School asks you to confirm the court and code before the final exam.

Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

The court mails a reminder notice to the address on the citation. It shows the bail and due date, any proof of correction the court needs, and your court and traffic school options. A notice can go astray for several reasons. The officer may still hold the citation, the DMV may have an old address, or the address on the ticket may be wrong.

A missing notice does not excuse you from the date on the citation. If the notice never comes, the court says to contact it, so call the Traffic Division at (415) 551-8540. A new ticket may not appear at first, because the officer's paperwork still has to be filed with the court. The traffic page also links a case calendar search by case type, date and name. The court never sends traffic ticket text messages, so ignore any that arrive.

The court's traffic page

How to ask for traffic school

Your reminder notice lists how San Francisco County Superior Court takes a traffic school request, and the court's traffic school page explains it. The court asks for the full bail and a non-refundable administrative fee, and you select the traffic school option as you pay. The notice and the traffic school page show the amounts.

The court's traffic mailing address is San Francisco Superior Court, 850 Bryant St., Room 145, San Francisco, CA 94103-4610. If your citation lists an out-of-state license and you now hold a California one, you must appear in court to correct it before you become eligible.

Your citation

What the court does with your ticket, and what Mirai Traffic School does for you.

From citation to certificate in San Francisco County

What San Francisco County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

Signing the citation was a promise to respond instead of being arrested. The reminder notice follows by mail, but the date on the citation holds even if the notice never comes.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

You need a valid California license and an eligible Vehicle Code infraction worth no more than one DMV point, with no traffic school in the past 18 months, nothing tied to alcohol or drugs, no tank vehicle charge under section 22406.5, and no more than 25 mph over the limit.

  3. 3

    You ask and pay

Pay the full bail and the court's administrative fee and select traffic school as you pay. If you enroll without being eligible, the court keeps the fees and reports the conviction to the DMV.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The court sets the time to finish, counted from the day you pay, and the traffic school page shows it. The clerk does not extend it. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756 and costs $24.99.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

The school notifies the DMV, and the court reads your completion electronically. The court accepts it only once the bail and the fee are paid, and then the point for the violation stays off your driving record.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about San Francisco County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

Once. Go to the Hall of Justice traffic windows as soon as you know you cannot come, within the notice period the court's page sets, and ask for an arraignment extension. The clerks grant no further extensions after that one. A trial continuance is asked for there too, ahead of the trial date, and is not automatic.

No. The court says that if you appeared before a judge and were not granted traffic school, you cannot sign up for it later.

Ask the court to consider your finances. You may qualify through public benefits such as Medi-Cal or CalFresh, through income below 250% of the Federal Poverty Level, or by describing a hardship. If you want traffic school, the court points you to the paper Ability to Pay form rather than the online application. Drivers who are unemployed, work part time or receive GA, SSI or SSA can work the fine off through Project 20 community service instead, which is not open to anyone choosing traffic school.

The court may add a civil assessment on top of the fine and refer the debt to a collection agency. The civil assessment may stand even if you later contest the ticket and win.

Be on time, because the court hears the case without you if you are absent when your name is called. The officer testifies first, then you may question the officer, testify, and present evidence and witnesses. The judge rules, and you have the right to appeal if you disagree. To request a trial in person or by mail, you pay the bail in full first.

Yes. Instead of coming to court, you mail a written statement on the Trial by Written Declaration form, with any documents that help. The court subpoenas a written report from the officer, and the judicial officer rules by mail.

No. Parking tickets go to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Interpreters and language help

San Francisco County Superior Court assigns court interpreters at no cost in traffic cases, and bilingual staff work at most clerk's offices, with telephone interpreters when they are not. Ask the clerk's office or the courtroom clerk, or email InterpreterRequests@sftc.org with the case name and number, the language, the date and the location. Ask well before the hearing, since the court may continue the case until an interpreter is free. Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
