Court code

Your DMV court code

A DMV court code is the five-digit number that sends your completion to the right court. The citation and courtesy notice name the courthouse, and the code goes with it.

Marin County Superior Court takes traffic in one building, the Hall of Justice at 3501 Civic Center Drive in San Rafael, and the DMV lists one traffic code for it, 21420. Juvenile infractions go through the same Traffic Clerk's Office, so there is no second code to pick.

Mirai Traffic School asks for your court and code before the final exam. For a Marin ticket, pick the Marin County Civic Center Hall of Justice and 21420.

A juvenile traffic infraction is handled like an adult ticket, so wait for the courtesy notice and follow it. A juvenile ticket written as a misdemeanor goes instead to the Probation Department's Juvenile Services Division, which contacts the family.

Your case

Finding your case

Signing the citation was your promise to appear or resolve it by the date at its bottom. That date is not a court date but the day to act by, and the notice comes only after the officer's agency files the citation. The Marin court resolves only citations issued in Marin County.

The courtesy notice shows the bail, any proof of correction the court needs, whether you must appear, and whether traffic school is open to you. It can fail to arrive when the court has not received the citation yet, the DMV has an old address, or the address on the citation is wrong. You must contact the court by the date on the citation either way. A driver who misses the notice's due date gets a final notice for failure to appear, one last chance before penalties.

The court's traffic page links its online system, and the automated line at (415) 448-8230 works the same way. Both need a case, citation or driver's license number and your date of birth, and both show citations pending before the court, traffic school due dates and scheduled court dates.

How to ask for traffic school

Your courtesy notice tells you how Marin County Superior Court takes a traffic school request, with instructions on its back, and the court's traffic page explains each way. The court charges an administrative fee on top of the bail on your notice, and the school collects its own fee. The notice and the traffic page show the court's amounts.

The court's traffic mailing address is Marin County Superior Court, Traffic, P.O. Box 4988, San Rafael, CA 94913-4988. A fix-it violation must be signed off by a law enforcement officer on the back of the citation and reach the Traffic Clerk's Office by the due date. For no proof of insurance, an officer cannot sign it off, so bring a policy or card valid on the citation date that shows its effective and expiration dates.

From citation to certificate in Marin County

What Marin County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

The officer's agency files the citation, and the court then mails a courtesy notice to the address on it. Act by the date at the bottom of the citation even if the notice is late.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

The court looks for a valid California license, no traffic school assigned or attended in the last 18 months, an infraction reportable to the DMV, speed no more than 25 mph over the limit, and no section that requires a mandatory appearance. A commercial license holder qualifies only when not driving a commercial vehicle, and certain serious violations are excluded.

  3. 3

    You ask the court

Ask the way your courtesy notice describes and pay the full bail with the court's non-refundable administrative fee.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The court sets the time to finish, counted from the day it receives your payment, and allows one extension if you ask before the due date. It accepts certificates from classroom and online schools the DMV accredits. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756 and costs $24.99.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

The school notifies the DMV, and the court reads your completion from the DMV's secure site. If you do not finish by the due date, the court reports the conviction to the DMV and keeps the fines and fees you posted.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about Marin County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

Plead not guilty by the due date by mail, through the court's online system or at the Traffic Clerk's Office, and pay the full bail first, as Vehicle Code section 40519 requires. The court holds the bail in trust until the ruling and subpoenas the officer. If you win, the court refunds the bail, and if you lose, it applies the bail to the fine.

Once. Send the request by mail or bring it in person, well ahead of the trial, as the court's contest page sets out. The court refuses any second reset, and the automated system cannot change a trial date.

Yes. File the Request for Trial by Written Declaration, form TR-205, by mail or in person by the due date, with the full bail. The court asks the officer for a written declaration too, gives it the same weight as any other trial, and mails its decision.

You may appeal to the court's Appellate Division with a Notice of Appeal, form CR-142, and then a Proposed Statement on Appeal, form CR-143. Miss the deadline on the court's FAQ and you lose the right to appeal. An appeal is not a new trial and does not pause your fine.

Yes, at any point before the fine is paid in full. You can ask for a reduction, more time or community service, but the court's online tool is not for signing up for traffic school or for contesting the ticket.

Yes. If you are eligible, you may attend while doing community service work or paying the court over time, but you still pay the administrative fee and the school's fee. Keep every payment on time, because the DMV rejects your completion when payments lag and the conviction then shows on your record.

Interpreters and language help

The Traffic Clerk's Office has several Spanish-speaking clerks, some forms come in Spanish, and a Spanish interpreter is usually in the courtroom. For a hearing, the court provides an interpreter in any case type at its own cost. Email interpreter@marin.courts.ca.gov as early as possible with your name, contact details, case number and name, the language and the hearing date. Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
