Important

The court decides whether you are eligible for traffic school. Mirai Traffic School cannot approve or guarantee eligibility. Check your courtesy notice, or ask San Mateo County Superior Court, if you are unsure.

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in San Mateo County.

San Mateo County covers the Peninsula between San Francisco and Santa Clara County, with the bay to the east and the ocean to the west. US 101 follows the bay shore from South San Francisco to East Palo Alto, and Interstate 280 runs along the hills from Daly City. Highway 1 hugs the coast through Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, and State Route 35 follows the ridge as Skyline Boulevard. Route 92 runs from Half Moon Bay to the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, and Route 84 through Redwood City to the Dumbarton Bridge. The Census Bureau counts 743,568 residents in 20 cities.

The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 3,333 people killed or injured in San Mateo County crashes in 2023, which ranks the county 36th of 58. In these rankings 1st is the worst. Two figures rank much higher. Bicyclists killed or injured numbered 216, 7th in the state, and pedestrians aged 65 or older numbered 45, 6th.

San Mateo County Superior Court hears every traffic arraignment in one building, the Northern Branch at 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco. The court says this holds wherever in the county you were cited, whether in East Palo Alto, Half Moon Bay or Daly City. If you need to appear, reserve a court date with a clerk by phone at (650) 363-4300. The Redwood City Area of the California Highway Patrol covers roads across parts of the county, and its Hayward Area takes a small piece near the Dumbarton Bridge, so a CHP ticket lands in the same Superior Court as one from a city police officer. Tickets for drivers under 18 go to the county Probation Department, not the court, at (650) 312-8887.

It is easy to assume a ticket goes to Redwood City, the county seat, where the Hall of Justice at 400 County Center is the court's Southern Branch. The court lists civil, criminal, family law, probate and small claims cases there, and its citation page says no other services for traffic cases are available at the Redwood City location. The hearing schedule still places some traffic trials in that building, so ask the clerk before you plan on one. On the DMV's code list, the county's one adult traffic code, 41470, is named Southern Traffic Division, Redwood City, and the Northern Branch has none. That code is a label in the DMV system, not a place to appear.

When the court allows traffic school, you pay the full bail plus a non-refundable administrative fee before you can enroll, and the court sets the date by which you must finish. If the traffic school date passes without a completion, the fee is forfeited as bail and the DMV is told of the conviction. Miss the citation's own due date and the court can add a civil assessment and place a hold on your license.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a San Mateo County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

San Mateo County Superior Court, at its Northern Branch in South San Francisco. The court's district page lists Redwood City under the Southern Branch, but its traffic FAQ sends every arraignment to South San Francisco. From US 101, the court's directions use the Grand Avenue exit. From Interstate 280, they use the Westborough exit.

You make two payments. The court takes the full bail plus its own administrative fee, and with more than one eligible violation you pay the highest bail plus that fee. Your Notice of Bail shows the amounts. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us, for the whole course and the final exam. If a court fine is a hardship, you can ask the court to consider your ability to pay.

The court sets the traffic school due date. If you need more time, ask the clerk by telephone or by mail before that date passes, because the court gives no extension once it has gone by. If your Notice of Bail has not arrived close to the appear-by date on your citation, call the Traffic Division.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. San Mateo County requires a valid California driver's license and an eligible infraction worth no more than one point. Seat belt, mechanical, equipment and no-insurance violations do not qualify, nor does a ticket related to alcohol or drugs. You cannot have attended traffic school for a violation in the prior 18 months, counted violation date to violation date, and the ticket's speed cannot be more than 25 mph over the limit. Any failure to appear must be resolved and paid first.

Yes. The court's traffic school page links to the California Traffic Safety Institute list for San Mateo County. That list shows Mirai Traffic School as E0756 with an internet course, the same number the California DMV licensed it under.

Once you pass, we report your completion to the DMV electronically. Since 2012 the court has taken completion certificates only in electronic form and no longer accepts paper copies. It publishes no figure for how long it takes to see the record, so check your case with the Traffic Division before your due date.

Mirai Traffic School teaches the whole course in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian, and the county's CTSI list shows Mirai Traffic School under its Japanese and Russian headings. In court, San Mateo County assigns qualified interpreters at no cost in traffic cases. Ask well ahead of the hearing so it is not postponed. The Interpreter Division answers questions at (650) 261-5023.
