San Bruno roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in San Bruno.
The Census Bureau estimates 42,305 residents in San Bruno on July 1, 2025. Four state routes cross the city. Interstate 280 and Interstate 380 carry the freeway traffic, State Route 35 follows Skyline Boulevard on the west side, and State Route 82 is El Camino Real, which continues north into South San Francisco and south into Millbrae.
Tickets in San Bruno come from two agencies. The San Bruno Police Department, a full-service municipal police agency, patrols city streets such as San Bruno Avenue and Cherry Avenue. On Interstate 280 and Interstate 380, the California Highway Patrol's San Francisco Area is responsible for the freeways from San Francisco south on the Peninsula to the City of Millbrae, and San Bruno lies inside that stretch. A ticket from either agency goes to San Mateo County Superior Court under the same traffic school rules.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 94 people killed or injured in San Bruno crashes, 41st of 93 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Motorcyclists stand out. Seven were killed or injured, 4th in the group. Pedestrians numbered 13, 24th, and speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 18, 32nd. Bicyclists numbered 4, 58th. These counts describe the city's roads as a whole and say nothing about fault in one driver's case.
San Bruno's Local Roadway Safety Plan analyzes the city's collisions, identifies high-injury locations and recommends countermeasures at each of them. Its aim is to reduce fatal and severe injury collisions through a ranked list of improvements. One project on the city's list is the intersection of San Bruno Avenue and Cherry Avenue, a busy crossing on the border between a residential neighborhood and a business district, with the Bayhill Shopping Center on one corner and Interstate 280 ramps a quarter mile to the west. The city says it needs better operations and safety there for pedestrians and vehicles. Another project would separate the Caltrain tracks from the road and from the pedestrian and bicycle crossing at South Linden Avenue and Scott Street.
The courthouse for a San Bruno ticket is just to the north, in South San Francisco. San Mateo County Superior Court holds all traffic arraignments at its Northern Branch, 1050 Mission Road, regardless of where in the county the citation was written. The Traffic Division answers at (650) 363-4300. The court mails a Notice of Bail to the address on the citation, and the notice lists the bail, the payment due date and traffic school information. When you enroll, give the court code printed on your citation.
Traffic school is a request you make to the court. San Mateo County Superior Court takes the bail and a non-refundable administrative fee first and will not let you enroll before both are paid. Both amounts and the due date come from the court and appear on your Notice of Bail. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. To qualify, you need a valid California driver's license and no traffic school for a violation in the 18 months before this one. The speed on the citation can be no more than 25 mph over the limit, and the violation can carry no more than one point. Seat belt, equipment and insurance violations do not qualify, and the court makes the final decision.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. If the course is not finished by the due date, the court keeps the bail and the administrative fee, so look up your case through the court's traffic page ahead of time and check that your name, license number and court code match.
