South San Francisco roads, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in South San Francisco.

The Census Bureau estimates 64,941 residents in South San Francisco on July 1, 2025. Five state routes cross the city: US 101, Interstate 280, Interstate 380, State Route 35 and State Route 82, which is El Camino Real. Away from those highways, the city maintains 156 centerline miles of its own roads and 69 traffic signals, most of them on its main arterial and collector streets.

Tickets in South San Francisco come from two agencies. The South San Francisco Police Department patrols city streets such as Oyster Point Boulevard and Westborough Boulevard, and it says it serves more than 60,000 residents plus nearly 100,000 people who work in the city during the week. On US 101, Interstate 280 and Interstate 380, the California Highway Patrol's San Francisco Area covers the Peninsula south to the City of Millbrae, and South San Francisco is inside that stretch. Either way the ticket goes to San Mateo County Superior Court, and the traffic school rules do not depend on which agency wrote it.

The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 284 people killed or injured in South San Francisco crashes, 25th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Pedestrians numbered 27, 12th in the group, and hit-and-run crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 27, 20th. Speed-related crashes of that kind numbered 41, 29th, and bicyclists killed or injured numbered 18, 33rd. The figures describe the whole city, not fault in any single driver's case.

South San Francisco's Local Roadway Safety Plan, dated January 2022, studied five years of crash data to find citywide trends, high-crash locations and locations with unusual crash patterns. Sideswipes were consistently the most common crash type. From 2016 to 2020 the city recorded 129 crashes involving pedestrians, 6 of them fatal, and a pedestrian was involved in 75% of all fatal crashes in that period. The plan ties its safety measures to engineering, enforcement, education, emergency services and emerging technologies.

The courthouse for every traffic arraignment in San Mateo County is in South San Francisco itself. San Mateo County Superior Court hears them at the Northern Branch, 1050 Mission Road, wherever in the county the ticket was written, and the Traffic Division answers at (650) 363-4300. The court mails a Notice of Bail to the address on your citation, with the bail, the payment due date and traffic school information. Enroll with the court code printed on your citation.

Traffic school is granted by the court, not by Mirai Traffic School. Before San Mateo County Superior Court lets you enroll, it must receive the bail and a non-refundable administrative fee, and it sets those amounts and the due date on the Notice of Bail. Mirai Traffic School's online course costs $24.99 on top of that. You need a valid California driver's license and no traffic school for another violation within the 18 months before. The speed on the ticket must be no more than 25 mph over the limit, and a violation carrying more than one point is out, as are seat belt, equipment and insurance violations. The court makes the final decision.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Before the due date on your Notice of Bail, find your case through the court's traffic page and make sure the name, license number and court code on the record match yours. A course that is not finished in time costs you the bail and the fee.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

San Mateo County Superior Court, at the Northern Branch on 1050 Mission Road inside South San Francisco. It hears every traffic arraignment in the county, so a ticket from US 101 or Oyster Point Boulevard stays in the city. Call the Traffic Division at (650) 363-4300 if your Notice of Bail is late or unclear.

$24.99 for the online course, final exam included. Bail and the court's administrative fee are separate and go to the court, which lists them on your Notice of Bail. Pay the court before you enroll, because it will not let you start traffic school until the payments are in. A Mirai Traffic School receipt is not proof of payment to the court.
