Burlingame roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Burlingame.
The Census Bureau estimates 31,929 residents in Burlingame on July 1, 2025. Two state highways cross the city. US 101 carries freeway traffic up and down the Peninsula, and State Route 82 is El Camino Real, the older main road that links Burlingame with Millbrae to the north and San Mateo to the south.
Tickets in Burlingame come from two agencies. The Burlingame Police Department is the city's own full-service department and patrols its streets. On the state highways, the California Highway Patrol's Redwood City Area and Hayward Area serve San Mateo County. Whichever agency writes the ticket, it goes to San Mateo County Superior Court, and the agency does not change the court's traffic school rules.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 88 people killed or injured in Burlingame crashes, 36th of 93 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 12, 48th in the group, and 5 motorcyclists were killed or injured, 27th. Pedestrians and bicyclists numbered 4 each. These are citywide counts and say nothing about fault in a single ticket.
In 2026 the City Council adopted the Burlingame Vision Zero Action Plan, which sets a goal of eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 2040. The plan was built from collision data and community input, and it names priority projects and strategies for street design, speed management, education and enforcement, e-micromobility and Safe Routes to School. The city's current work includes the El Camino Real Roadway Renewal Project, the Broadway Grade Separation Study and traffic calming in the Lyon-Hoag neighborhood.
A ticket written in Burlingame is heard in South San Francisco. San Mateo County Superior Court holds every traffic arraignment in the county at its Northern Branch, 1050 Mission Road, no matter where in the county the officer stopped you. The court's Traffic Division answers at (650) 363-4300. The court mails a Notice of Bail to the address on your citation, and you use the court code printed on the citation when you enroll.
Traffic school is something you ask the court for, and the court will not let you enroll until you pay the bail and its non-refundable administrative fee. The court sets both amounts and the due date, and the Notice of Bail shows them. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. San Mateo County Superior Court asks for a valid California driver's license, no traffic school for a violation in the 18 months before, no more than 25 mph over the limit, and a violation worth no more than one point. Seat belt, equipment and insurance violations do not qualify. The court makes the final decision.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Before the due date, look up your case through the court's traffic page and check that your name, license number and court code match, so there is time to fix a mistake.
