Belmont roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Belmont.
The Census Bureau estimates 28,752 residents in Belmont on July 1, 2025. US 101 and State Route 82, which is El Camino Real, both cross the city. Ralston Avenue crosses Belmont from its western city limits at Christian Drive to its eastern limits. Caltrans road data for 2022 counts 68 centerline miles of road inside the city.
Tickets in Belmont come from two agencies. The Belmont Police Department, which has served the city since 1926, patrols local streets such as Ralston Avenue. On the state highways, the California Highway Patrol's Redwood City Area and Hayward Area serve San Mateo County. Both agencies send their tickets to San Mateo County Superior Court, so the same traffic school rules apply whoever stopped you.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 48 people killed or injured in Belmont crashes, 60th of 93 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. People on two wheels fare worse than that total suggests. Bicyclists killed or injured numbered 6, 26th in the group, and motorcyclists numbered 3, 25th. Pedestrians numbered 4, 60th, and speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 11, 35th.
Belmont has its own chapter in the countywide Local Roadway Safety Plan. From 2018 through 2022 it counts 244 reported crashes on the city's surface streets, 8 of them fatal or with a severe injury. Bicyclists were in 14 percent of all those crashes but 25 percent of the worst ones, and one crash in four happened in the dark. Driving too fast for conditions was the violation cited most often in motor vehicle injury crashes, at 26 percent. The city's vision is to end traffic deaths and cut non-fatal crashes by 50 percent by 2040.
The plan puts parts of Ralston Avenue, El Camino Real, Alameda de las Pulgas, Old County Road and Lyall Way on the countywide high injury network. It scopes safety work along Ralston Avenue with dynamic speed warning signs, marked pedestrian crossings and separated or buffered bike lanes. For El Camino Real, which Caltrans maintains, it suggests that Belmont seek grant funding together with Caltrans and neighboring cities. At the Belmont Farmers' Market in 2023, residents asked for lower speed limits and raised concerns about traffic near schools at drop-off and pick-up.
Every Belmont ticket is answered in South San Francisco. San Mateo County Superior Court holds all of its traffic arraignments at the Northern Branch, 1050 Mission Road, no matter where in the county the officer wrote the citation. The branch has no DMV court code of its own, so you enroll with the code printed on your citation. The court mails a Notice of Bail to the address on the ticket, and the Traffic Division answers at (650) 363-4300.
You request traffic school from the court, and it wants the full bail plus a non-refundable administrative fee before you may enroll. The Notice of Bail lists both amounts and the due date. The court adds that every traffic school charges a separate registration fee, and Mirai Traffic School's is $24.99. To qualify you need a valid California driver's license, a violation worth no more than one point, a speed no more than 25 mph over the limit, and no traffic school for a violation in the previous 18 months. The court measures those 18 months between the two violation dates, not from the day you finished the earlier course. If the ticket became a failure to appear, you must first resolve that charge and pay any fine or civil assessment the court imposed. The court makes the final decision.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The DMV then keeps the conviction confidential, as it does for one conviction in any 18-month period. Missing the due date costs you the bail and the fee, and the violation appears on your DMV driving record. Before that date, look up your case from the court's traffic page and confirm your name, license number and court code.
