Redwood City roads, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Redwood City.

The Census Bureau estimates 82,178 residents in Redwood City on July 1, 2025. US 101 and State Routes 82 and 84 cross the city. Caltrans, not the city, owns and maintains El Camino Real, Woodside Road and the Highway 101 over-crossings inside city limits.

Tickets in Redwood City come from two agencies. The Redwood City Police Department patrols city streets. The California Highway Patrol's Redwood City Area, based at 355 Convention Way in the city, covers the freeways, and its list includes US 101, Interstate 280 and State Routes 82 and 84. Whichever agency writes the ticket, it goes to San Mateo County Superior Court under the same traffic school rules.

The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 236 people killed or injured in Redwood City crashes, 56th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. The city ranks worst on bicyclists, with 36 killed or injured, 5th in the group. Pedestrians numbered 29, 22nd, and 9 of them were 65 or older, 6th. Crashes involving alcohol killed or injured 30 people, 49th, and speed-related crashes that hurt or killed someone numbered 37, 52nd.

In 2018 the city adopted RWCmoves, its first citywide transportation plan. RWC Walk Bike Thrive then brought the city's Vision Zero, pedestrian and bicycle plans together, with a goal of eliminating traffic deaths and severe injuries on city streets by 2030. The plan counts just over 1,400 injury collisions on Redwood City streets from 2015 through 2019, and 62 of them killed or severely injured someone. People walking and bicycling were involved in a quarter of the injury collisions and make up nearly half of all traffic deaths. Its list of top collision intersections starts with Woodside Road at Broadway, Woodside Road at Middlefield Road and El Camino Real at Jefferson Avenue.

The city ties the layout where State Route 84 meets US 101 to congestion, merging trouble and traffic backing up onto the freeway, and counts 195 collisions there from 2018 to 2022. Its SR84-US101 Interchange Reimagined project would remove the five-legged intersection at Woodside Road and Broadway and replace the US 101 ramps with multi-lane ramps.

The court's Southern Branch, the Hall of Justice and Records at 400 County Center, stands in Redwood City, but the court lists it for civil, criminal, family law, probate and small claims cases. Traffic arraignments for the whole county, Redwood City tickets included, take place at the Northern Branch, 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco. The Traffic Division answers at (650) 363-4300. The court mails a Notice of Bail to the address on your citation and asks you to wait for it before you handle the ticket. If it never arrives, the date on the citation still applies. Juvenile traffic cases go to the county Probation Department, not the Superior Court.

You ask the court for traffic school, and it decides. You cannot enroll until you pay the full bail plus a non-refundable administrative fee. The court sets both amounts and the due date, and the Notice of Bail shows the bail, the due date and traffic school information. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. San Mateo County Superior Court requires a valid California driver's license and no traffic school for a violation committed in the last 18 months. It refuses traffic school for speeds more than 25 mph over the limit, for violations worth more than one point, and for seat belt, equipment and insurance violations.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Give the court code printed on your citation when you enroll. Before the due date, look your case up on the court's traffic page and check that your name, license number and court code match.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Redwood City citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

San Mateo County Superior Court, at its Northern Branch, 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco. The Hall of Justice is in Redwood City, but the court hears every traffic arraignment in the county at the Northern Branch. Call the Traffic Division at (650) 363-4300 if your Notice of Bail has not come.

The online course and its final exam cost $24.99 in total. Your Redwood City case also carries bail and a non-refundable administrative fee, which San Mateo County Superior Court sets and collects. Pay the court first, since it will not let you enroll until it has both. A course receipt proves only that you paid for the course.

The Office of Traffic Safety counts 236 people killed or injured in Redwood City in 2023, 56th of 103 similar cities. The city ranks 5th for bicyclists, with 36 killed or injured, and 6th for pedestrians 65 or older, with 9. The ranks compare cities and say nothing about fault or eligibility in your case.

By the due date San Mateo County Superior Court sets for your case, which the Notice of Bail shows. If you miss it, the court keeps the bail and the administrative fee you paid, so finish the course well before then.

Mirai Traffic School adds your completion to the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion database under license E0756, and the court retrieves it there. Keep the confirmation with your Redwood City citation number, and look the case up on the court's traffic page before the due date.

The Redwood City Police Department on city streets, and the California Highway Patrol's Redwood City Area on US 101 and the other state highways. Both send tickets to San Mateo County Superior Court, so the traffic school rules are the same whichever agency stopped you.
