Menlo Park roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Menlo Park.
The Census Bureau estimates 32,713 residents in Menlo Park on July 1, 2025. US 101, Interstate 280 and State Routes 82, 84, 109 and 114 all cross the city. Willow Road is State Route 114 between Bayfront Expressway and US 101. El Camino Real is one of the few north-south through streets, and it divides the city, with the downtown business district on the west side and the Civic Center and library on the east.
Tickets in Menlo Park come from two agencies. The Menlo Park Police Department patrols city streets. On the state highways, the California Highway Patrol's Redwood City Area and Hayward Area serve San Mateo County, and the Redwood City Area's freeways include US 101, Interstate 280 and State Routes 82 and 84. A ticket from either agency goes to San Mateo County Superior Court, which applies the same traffic school rules to both.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 138 people killed or injured in Menlo Park crashes, 12th of 93 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Bicyclists killed or injured numbered 31, the worst count in the group, and 7 of them were under 15, 3rd. Pedestrians numbered 12, 19th, and speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 27, 7th. These counts cover the whole city, not the facts of any one ticket.
In January 2024 the city adopted a Vision Zero Action Plan to carry out its policy of eliminating all traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2040. The city also builds fixes from temporary materials such as paint and posts, which it calls quick-build projects. At Menlo Avenue and University Drive, where pedestrian collisions were frequent, it combined the turn lanes, added a high-visibility crosswalk and built bulb-outs that shorten the crossing. At Alma Street it tightened the turn onto Willow Road to slow turning vehicles. On Willow Road itself, Caltrans added high-visibility crossings, bike lane buffers and leading pedestrian intervals when it repaved the road in late 2022 and early 2023.
San Mateo County Superior Court handles Menlo Park tickets at its Northern Branch, 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco, where it hears every traffic arraignment in the county wherever the citation was issued. The court's Traffic Division takes calls at (650) 363-4300. It mails a Notice of Bail to the address on the citation and asks you to wait for that notice before taking care of the ticket, but the date on the citation still counts if the notice never comes. Juvenile traffic cases go to the county's Probation Department instead of the Superior Court. When you enroll, give the court code printed on your citation.
You ask the court for traffic school, and the court decides. It will not let you enroll until you have paid the full bail and a non-refundable administrative fee, and it sets those amounts and the due date for your case. The Notice of Bail shows the bail, the payment due date and traffic school information. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. San Mateo County Superior Court asks for a valid California driver's license and no traffic school for a violation committed within the last 18 months. It turns away speeds more than 25 mph over the limit, violations that carry more than one point, and seat belt, equipment and insurance violations.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Use the case lookup on the court's traffic page to confirm your name, license number and court code before the due date, which leaves time to correct an error.
