The Census Bureau estimates 22,869 residents in Millbrae on July 1, 2025. Three state routes cross the city. US 101 and Interstate 280 carry the freeway traffic, and El Camino Real is State Route 82.
Tickets in Millbrae come from two agencies. The city had its own police department from 1948 until 2012, when the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office took over law enforcement under contract. A Sheriff's Captain now acts as Millbrae's chief of police, and at least two uniformed deputies are on duty at all hours. On the state highways, the California Highway Patrol's Redwood City Area and Hayward Area serve San Mateo County. Tickets from either agency go to San Mateo County Superior Court, and the traffic school rules are the same for both.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 64 people killed or injured in Millbrae crashes, 39th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Pedestrians aged 65 and over ranked higher. Three of them were killed or injured, 6th in the group, out of 7 pedestrians in all. Speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 19, 21st, and motorcyclists killed or injured numbered 5, 13th. The figures describe the city as a whole and not any one driver's case.
In August 2026 Millbrae started updating its Local Roadway Safety Action Plan under the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets for All program. The plan aims to sharply reduce or eliminate deaths and serious injuries for everyone on the road, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, motorists and commercial operators. Its recommendations focus on city streets, but its collision analysis also covers state routes within Millbrae, such as El Camino Real. The city asks residents to report problem spots through a questionnaire and map survey, with examples such as speeding on a stretch of road or cars that do not stop at a stop sign.
San Mateo County Superior Court hears Millbrae tickets at its Northern Branch, 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco, the courthouse where every traffic arraignment in the county takes place no matter where the citation was written. Reach the Traffic Division at (650) 363-4300. The court mails a Notice of Bail to the address on your citation, and its instructions are to wait for that notice before handling the ticket. The deadline on the citation still applies if no notice arrives. Enroll in traffic school with the court code printed on your citation.
The court, not the school, grants traffic school. San Mateo County Superior Court requires the total bail and a non-refundable administrative fee before it lets you enroll, and it decides both amounts and the due date. Your Notice of Bail lists the bail, the payment due date and traffic school information. Mirai Traffic School charges a separate $24.99 for the course. To be eligible you need a valid California driver's license, and you cannot have attended traffic school for a violation committed in the prior 18 months. Speeds more than 25 mph over the limit do not qualify, and neither do violations worth more than one point or seat belt, equipment and insurance violations.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Before the due date, find your case with the lookup on the court's traffic page and compare the name, license number and court code with your own, so any error can still be fixed.
