Daly City roads, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Daly City.

The Census Bureau estimates 101,261 residents in Daly City on July 1, 2025. Four state routes cross it: Interstate 280, State Route 1, State Route 35 and State Route 82, the route that runs through the city as Mission Street.

Tickets in Daly City come from two agencies. The Daly City Police Department patrols city streets. On the freeways, the California Highway Patrol's San Francisco Area covers the Peninsula south to the City of Millbrae on US 101 and Interstate 280, and State Route 1 south to Montara Beach, which takes in Daly City. A ticket from either agency is heard by San Mateo County Superior Court under the same traffic school rules.

The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 256 people killed or injured in Daly City crashes, 37th of 62 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Pedestrians stand out: 43 were killed or injured, 4th worst in the group. Motorcyclists numbered 14, 7th, and bicyclists 16, 30th. Speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 29, 54th. These counts describe the city's streets, not who was at fault in any single case.

In April 2020 the City Council adopted a Vision Zero policy to end serious and fatal traffic crashes in Daly City by 2035, and the city says it was the first Vision Zero community in San Mateo County. It counted 35 serious and fatal crashes in 2020 and 2021 alone. The city's High Injury Network holds 64% of all crashes and 83% of fatal or serious injury crashes on 17% of its roadway network. Current work includes the Mission Street Streetscape Project between Crocker Avenue and Templeton Avenue, and high visibility crosswalks on Junipero Serra Boulevard, Callan Boulevard, Gellert Boulevard and King Drive.

San Mateo County Superior Court hears traffic arraignments from the whole county in one place, the Northern Branch at 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco. That includes a ticket written anywhere in Daly City. Reach the Traffic Division at (650) 363-4300. The court mails its Notice of Bail to the address the officer wrote on the citation, and the citation itself carries the court code you give when you enroll.

You request traffic school from the court, and San Mateo County Superior Court will not let you enroll until the bail and a non-refundable administrative fee are paid. Both amounts come from the court, as does the due date, and the Notice of Bail lists them. Mirai Traffic School charges its own $24.99 for the course. To qualify you need a valid California driver's license, no traffic school for a violation in the 18 months before, a speed no more than 25 mph over the limit, and a violation of no more than one point. Seat belt, equipment and insurance violations are left out, and the court has the last word.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Look up your case from the court's traffic page before the due date, and compare your name, license number and court code with the record so a mismatch can still be fixed.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Daly City citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

San Mateo County Superior Court, at its Northern Branch, 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco. The court hears every traffic arraignment in the county there, so a Daly City stop on Interstate 280 or Mission Street ends up in the same building. Call the Traffic Division at (650) 363-4300 if your Notice of Bail has not come.

$24.99 for the online course, final exam included. Your bail and the court's administrative fee go to the court, not to Mirai Traffic School, and the Notice of Bail lists them. Pay the court first, because it will not let you enroll before it has the payments.

The Office of Traffic Safety counts 256 people killed or injured in 2023, 37th of 62 similar cities. Pedestrians numbered 43, 4th in the group, motorcyclists 14, 7th, and bicyclists 16, 30th. The figures describe conditions across Daly City, not fault or eligibility in one case.

On the due date San Mateo County Superior Court sets, printed on your Notice of Bail. Miss it and the court keeps the bail and the administrative fee you paid, so leave yourself time to finish the course and to check that the court has your completion.

Mirai Traffic School reports it electronically through the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion system under license E0756, and the court retrieves it there. Keep Mirai Traffic School's confirmation with your citation number, and check your case on the court's traffic page before the due date.

The Daly City Police Department on city streets, and on Interstate 280 and State Route 1 the California Highway Patrol's San Francisco Area, whose jurisdiction runs south to Millbrae and Montara Beach. All of these tickets go to San Mateo County Superior Court, so the traffic school rules do not change with the agency.
