Half Moon Bay roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Half Moon Bay.
The Census Bureau estimates 11,287 residents in Half Moon Bay on July 1, 2025. Two state highways cross the city. State Route 1 follows the coast through town, and State Route 92 comes in from the east and meets it. State Route 1, San Mateo Road and Main Street are all on the countywide high injury network mapped in the city's roadway safety plan.
Tickets in Half Moon Bay come from two agencies. The city has contracted with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement since mid-2011, and enforcing traffic laws is one of the services the Sheriff's Office provides there. On the state highways, the California Highway Patrol's Redwood City Area and Hayward Area serve San Mateo County. Whichever agency stops you, the ticket goes to San Mateo County Superior Court, and its traffic school rules stay the same.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 60 people killed or injured in Half Moon Bay crashes, 4th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Crashes involving alcohol killed or injured 16 people, 5th in the group. Motorcyclists killed or injured numbered 9, 2nd, and speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 11, 6th. These are counts for the whole city and do not show fault in any single stop.
The city's Local Roadway Safety Plan, a March 2024 draft written as a chapter of the countywide plan, counts 145 injury crashes on Half Moon Bay's surface roads from 2018 through 2022. Of those, 17 were fatal or severe, and 116 of the 145 happened on the state highways. Among motor vehicle crashes, the violation cited most often was driving too fast for conditions, in 37 percent of injury crashes. The plan ranks Highway 1 at Poplar Street first among its priority locations, and the list also takes in the Main Street corridor and the Highway 1 intersection with Highway 92. Its vision is to eliminate traffic deaths and cut non-fatal crashes by 50 percent by 2050.
Every traffic arraignment in San Mateo County is heard at the Northern Branch, 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco, wherever in the county the ticket was written, so a Half Moon Bay case goes there as well. The Traffic Division answers at (650) 363-4300. The court tells drivers to wait for the Notice of Bail it mails to the address on the citation before acting on the ticket. If that notice never comes, you still have to act by the date on the citation. Enroll with the court code printed on your citation.
Traffic school is something you ask the court for. You pay the bail plus a non-refundable administrative fee first, because the court will not let you enroll until it has both. The court sets those amounts and the due date, and the Notice of Bail lists the bail, the due date and traffic school information. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. To qualify you need a valid California driver's license and no traffic school for a violation in the 18 months before this one. The speed on the citation cannot be more than 25 mph over the limit, and violations worth more than one point are out, along with seat belt, equipment and insurance violations. The court makes the final decision.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Look up the case from the court's traffic page before the due date. If your name, license number or court code does not match, there is still time to have it fixed.
