Court code

Your DMV court code

Every California traffic court has a five-digit DMV court code. It matches your completion to your case at the right court. Your ticket and reminder notice name the courthouse, and the code belongs to that courthouse.

San Diego County Superior Court splits traffic among four divisions, and each has its own code. Code 37480 is Central Traffic at Kearny Mesa, 37465 is North County in Vista, 37485 is South County in Chula Vista, and 37440 is East County in El Cajon. A misdemeanor against a juvenile is filed at Juvenile Court, code 37200.

The court code is one of the details you must give the traffic school, and the court warns that a missing or wrong detail can keep the completion off your case. Before the final exam, Mirai Traffic School asks you to confirm your courthouse and its code.

Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

Your ticket carries the citation number, and near its bottom the court's name and address show where the ticket was filed. The court then mails a reminder notice to the address on the ticket, showing the bail, the due date, whether you may be eligible for traffic school and how to clear a fix-it violation.

The appear-by date is not a hearing date. It is the date by which you must act on the ticket, whether or not the notice arrives. If no notice comes, the court says to search online, call, visit the business office or write before that date. The court's traffic page is the place to start online, and it links the court's own case search.

The court's traffic page

How to ask for traffic school

Your reminder notice tells you whether you may be eligible and shows the total the court charges for traffic school. The court's traffic school page explains each way San Diego County Superior Court lets you ask, and each comes with a one-time continuance to finish the course. A request by mail goes to the courthouse named on your ticket or notice.

If you want an infraction to proceed as a misdemeanor, the court says you must appear in court and make that election before you attend traffic school. Attending first gives up that right, under Penal Code sections 17 and 19.8.

From citation to certificate in San Diego County

What San Diego County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

The ticket names the court that has your case and an appear-by date. The court later mails a reminder notice, but the appear-by date holds whether or not it arrives.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

Do not attend unless your notice says you may be eligible. The court follows California Rules of Court, rule 4.104. You are not eligible if you attended traffic school for a violation within 18 months of this one, or if you hold a commercial license and were driving a commercial vehicle.

  3. 3

    You ask the court

By the date on your notice, ask the way the court's traffic school page describes and pay the traffic school total your notice shows. The court then grants the continuance.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The court sets how long you have to finish, and its traffic school page shows it. Give the school your full name, date of birth, license number, case or citation number and court code. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756 and costs $24.99.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

Traffic schools must notify the court electronically, and the court tells California-licensed drivers to rely on the school for it. A driver with an out-of-state license gets a paper certificate and sends the signed original to the court.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about San Diego County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

The one whose name and address are near the bottom of your ticket. Central Division tickets go to Kearny Mesa, and North County, South County and East County tickets go to the regional center in Vista, Chula Vista or El Cajon. That courthouse decides which DMV code your completion carries.

Schedule it online or call the courthouse where your ticket is filed. The appear-by date on your ticket is not a hearing date, so a courtroom appearance needs its own date. Bail is not required to appear in court.

The court may grant a one-time extension of the appearance date on eligible tickets, if you ask on or before that date. You can ask online, by mail, by fax, in person or by phone. The court gives no second extension.

Yes. For an infraction, send form MO-012, the Request for Arraignment and Trial on Same Date. Bail is not required with it, and the court mails you the arraignment and trial date.

The court says it does not conduct business by text message, and all its official correspondence comes by U.S. mail. Call the courthouse on your ticket instead of answering the message.

You can plead guilty in writing on form MO-041 with a written explanation of your hardship, and the court suggests form TR-320, Can't Afford to Pay Fine. You can also ask it to consider your ability to pay, a lower bail, a reduced payment amount or community service in place of the fine.

Interpreters and language help

The court's policy is to provide an interpreter at no cost for courtroom proceedings, given available resources. Ask on form ADM-348, as far ahead of the hearing as you can, and ask again for each proceeding. If no interpreter is free, the court may continue the case or use a telephone interpreting service. Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
