What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Alameda.
The Census Bureau estimates 76,876 residents in Alameda on July 1, 2025. Alameda is an island city, and more than half the area inside its limits is water, 12.58 of about 23 square miles. State Route 61 comes in over the Bay Farm Island Bridge and follows Otis Drive, Broadway, Encinal Avenue and Central Avenue to Webster Street. From there State Route 260 runs through the Posey and Webster Street tubes under the estuary to Oakland.
Tickets in Alameda come from two kinds of agency. The Alameda Police Department patrols city streets such as Park Street, Webster Street and Otis Drive, while the California Highway Patrol's Redwood City, Hayward, Oakland and Dublin Areas serve Alameda County. A ticket from either one goes to Alameda County Superior Court, and the court applies the same traffic school rules whichever agency wrote it.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 198 people killed or injured in Alameda crashes, 71st of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Pedestrians fare worse in that comparison, with 29 killed or injured and a rank of 20th, and 23 bicyclists were killed or injured, 24th. The figures count victims, not tickets.
Most Alameda streets are posted at 25 mph. In December 2021 the city adopted a Vision Zero Action Plan that aims to end traffic deaths and severe injuries by 2035. The plan found that 73 percent of crashes happen on high injury corridors, which cover 20 percent of the city's streets, and that failure to yield, unsafe speed and improper turning were the most common driver behaviors in them.
The city points its enforcement at the behaviors behind severe and fatal crashes. In 2025 Alameda police recorded 6,316 citations and warnings for moving violations, 72 percent more than in 2024, and 70 percent of them were on high injury corridors. That year one person died and eight were severely injured in collisions on city streets.
The Alameda County Public Works Agency runs the drawbridges over the Oakland-Alameda Estuary, and four of them carry cars. The Park Street Bridge alone carries about 21,400 vehicles a day northbound and opens for boats about 1,755 times a year.
Adult traffic tickets from Alameda go to Alameda County Superior Court, which hears traffic in Oakland, Fremont and Dublin. The courthouse on Shore Line Drive in Alameda is not on the court's list of traffic locations. The Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse at 661 Washington Street in Oakland is the closest of the three, uses DMV court code 01440, and its Traffic Division clerk's office answers at (510) 627-4700.
Traffic school is something you ask the court for. Alameda County Superior Court wants the bail and its state-mandated traffic school administrative fee paid before you sign up with a school, and your courtesy notice shows both amounts and the date to finish. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. The court asks for a valid license on the day you were cited, no traffic school in the 18 months before, counted from violation date to violation date, and a moving violation that is not a misdemeanor, involves no alcohol or drugs and needs no court appearance. It turns away speeds of 25 mph or more over the limit and carpool-lane tickets under Vehicle Code 21655.5.
After you pass the final exam, Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The court points drivers to the California Traffic Safety Institute list, and Mirai Traffic School appears on the Alameda County list as E0756. Before the date on your notice, check your case with the court and confirm that your name, license number and court code 01440 match.
