Traffic courts in Butte County

Your courtesy notice names the courthouse assigned to your case.

Traffic Division, North Butte County Courthouse1775 Concord Avenue, Chico, CA 95928DMV court code 04100 · (530) 532-7005

Every adult Butte County ticket carries DMV court code 04100, wherever in the county you were cited.

Citations issued to drivers under 18 are handled separately: Juvenile traffic, Butte County Courthouse, Oroville, (530) 532-7005.

Important

The court decides whether you are eligible for traffic school. Mirai Traffic School cannot approve or guarantee eligibility. Check your courtesy notice, or ask Butte County Superior Court, if you are unsure.

Butte County traffic court, a Chico counter and an Oroville courthouse

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Butte County.

Butte County rises from the Sacramento Valley floor around Chico and Gridley to foothill towns such as Paradise, and the Census estimated 209,211 residents on July 1, 2025. State Route 99 runs through Chico, State Route 70 through Oroville, and State Routes 32 and 162 head west toward Glenn County. The Office of Traffic Safety counted 979 people killed or injured in Butte County crashes in 2023, 48th of 58 counties, where 1st means the worst record.

The court's Traffic Division, at the North Butte County Courthouse, 1775 Concord Avenue in Chico, handles adult and juvenile citations for the whole county and answers at (530) 532-7005. The California Highway Patrol splits the county between two offices, the Chico Area in the north and the Oroville Area in the south, and a ticket from either one lands in the same Superior Court as a ticket from a city police officer.

When the court allows traffic school, you ask for it by paying a non-refundable traffic school fee along with the bail. The court sets the fee and the due date, and your courtesy notice shows them. Paying the bail alone is a bail forfeiture, and the court reports it as a conviction on your driving record. Finish the course by the due date and the court reports the violation to the DMV as a confidential conviction instead.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Butte County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

You pay the court and the school separately. The court charges the bail plus a non-refundable traffic school fee, both shown on your courtesy notice. Mirai Traffic School's course costs $24.99 with the final exam included. If the court's amount is more than you can manage, ask it to reduce what you owe based on your ability to pay.

Wait for your courtesy notice. The court mails it to the address on your citation, and it says whether you are eligible. Then pay the fee and the bail together, the way the notice describes. If no notice comes, call the Traffic Division at (530) 532-7005.

Until the due date the court gives you, which your courtesy notice shows. The school sends your completion certificate to the court. Finish early, because a missed date turns the fee into forfeited bail and the court reports the conviction.

That is the court's decision, not Mirai Traffic School's. You need a valid driver's license, no traffic school within 18 months counted from violation date to violation date, and no failure to appear or civil assessment on the citation. The court turns away violations worth more than one point, speeding more than 25 mph over the limit, alcohol and drug violations, and any violation in a commercial vehicle.

The DMV's search for traffic violator schools, which includes home study and online courses. The court prints no list of its own. Look for Mirai Traffic School there under DMV license E0756.

Mirai Traffic School's lessons and final exam come in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. Butte County Superior Court provides interpreters at no cost in all court proceedings. Give form SS01 to the clerk's office, or ask out loud for a telephone interpreter.

To Oroville, not Chico. Juvenile traffic and infraction matters are heard at the Butte County Courthouse on One Court Street, where the court's Juvenile Division also sits.
