Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

Your courtesy notice shows the bail, the due date, whether traffic school is open to you and whether you must appear in court.

When it leaves a question open, call Court Services at (530) 623-1208 or go to the Main Courthouse. The court asks you not to rely on email when a date is close, because an email does not excuse a missed appearance or payment. Online, start from the court's traffic page. It has sections on proof of correction, traffic school, contesting a ticket and missed deadlines.

How to ask for traffic school

Trinity County Superior Court takes traffic school requests on the courtesy notice itself. If the notice says you are eligible, sign the bottom, check the box asking for traffic violator school, and pay the court's traffic school fee plus the bail by the due date, in person at the Main Courthouse or by mail. The court sets both amounts, the fee is non-refundable, and the notice and the court's traffic school page show what you owe.

Once the court has your request, it continues your case and gives you a date to finish traffic school by.

What the court does with your ticket, and what Mirai Traffic School does for you.

From citation to certificate in Trinity County

What Trinity County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

After the ticket, the court sends a courtesy notice with the amount due and your options. If the notice says you must appear, call the court to set a date. The court allows no extension on a mandatory appearance.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

You need a moving violation, no traffic school in the past 18 months, no more than 3 infractions and no misdemeanor on your record, and a speed no more than 25 mph over the limit. A commercial vehicle, an alcohol or drug violation, a violation worth more than one point, or an unpaid civil assessment after a missed date rules it out.

  3. 3

    You ask the court

Return the signed courtesy notice with the traffic school box checked, and pay the fee and the bail by the due date. Paying the bail alone closes the case as a conviction, and the court says most moving violations stay on the record 3 years as 1 point.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The court directs you to finish by a date it sets, and you may attend any licensed school on the DMV's list. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756 and costs $24.99.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

The court needs your certificate of completion by its date. It then reports a confidential conviction, which the DMV shows to no one outside the courts, your insurer included, and no point is added. If the certificate never arrives, the fee becomes bail, the bail is forfeited and the violation shows on your record.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about Trinity County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

Written proof of medical incapacity, hospitalization, incarceration or out-of-state military duty. The court wants proof it can verify, on proper letterhead. After a civil assessment notice, send the original bail and the assessment by the date the notice gives, with any proof of correction the case needs. Missing that date brings a civil judgment and a referral to collections.

Pay the bail or fine, or reserve a court appointment, and the court removes the hold. Until then a hold can keep you from registering a vehicle.

Appear for arraignment on the date the court gives you. The officer who wrote the ticket is not there. If you plead not guilty, the court sets a trial date. To book a trial without an arraignment, post bail first. At trial the court subpoenas the officer, you may call your own witnesses and hire a lawyer, and you may appeal the ruling.

Ask on or before the due date on your courtesy notice and post the full bail. Your case must be infractions only, with no earlier failure to appear or failure to pay, and you plead not guilty in writing on a Request For Trial form. A judge reads your statement and the officer's, then rules. If you lose, you can ask for a new trial, called a trial de novo, on form TR-220.

A law enforcement officer can sign off any correctable violation. The DMV or the court clerk can certify license, registration and insurance violations. Signing it off yourself does not count, and selling the car does not end your duty to correct it. The proof must reach the court before your arraignment date, and never by phone or online.

Pay the warrant and the court recalls it, so you are not arrested. If you then miss the court appointment you set, another warrant or a DMV hold follows, with more fees.

Interpreters and language help

Trinity County Superior Court provides interpreters in criminal, traffic, juvenile and family support cases, and not in small claims or civil cases. To ask for one, call the Court Interpreter Coordinator at (530) 623-1369 and fill in the Request for Interpreter form well before your hearing. The court's site has a Spanish translation option and links its Limited English Proficiency Plan. Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
