Tracy's freeway triangle, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Tracy.
The Census Bureau estimates 101,901 residents in Tracy on July 1, 2025, the second largest population of any city in San Joaquin County. Three interstates form a triangle around much of the city, with Interstate 205 on the north, Interstate 5 to the east and Interstate 580 to the southwest. Business Loop 205 runs through the center of town along 11th Street, which was once part of U.S. Highway 50.
Tickets in Tracy come from two agencies. The Tracy Police Department provides law enforcement for the city, and the California Highway Patrol's Tracy Area works the interstates. The Tracy Area calls its patch the Tracy Triangle and counts more than 101,000 motorists on its freeways each day, much of it commercial and commuter traffic. A ticket from either agency goes to San Joaquin County Superior Court, and the court uses one set of traffic school rules for both.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 223 people killed or injured in Tracy crashes, 89th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 30, ranking 88th, and 24 people were killed or injured in crashes involving alcohol, 74th. Pedestrians killed or injured numbered 10, 96th, and bicyclists 15, 77th. DUI arrests in the city came to 138, 42nd in the group.
The city asked residents in 2026 to weigh in on two safety programs. The Active Transportation Program project centers on the East Schulte Safety and Multimodal Community Corridor, with proposed safer pedestrian crossings, new or improved flashing beacons, protected and buffered bike lanes, sidewalk gap closures and traffic calming. The Safe Streets and Roads for All project looks across the city for priority intersections and corridors where curb extensions, more high-visibility crossings, school-area striping and coordinated signals can reduce collisions.
Adult traffic tickets from Tracy go to San Joaquin County Superior Court. Tracy has no courthouse. The court's traffic courthouses are in Stockton, Manteca and Lodi, and the closest to Tracy is the Manteca Courthouse at 315 E. Center Street, which hears criminal and traffic cases on the line (209) 239-1316. Only the Stockton Courthouse has a code on the DMV's court code list, 39460, so if your notice names Manteca, ask that line which code to use. Your citation and courtesy notice decide which courthouse has your case.
Traffic school has to be requested from the court. On top of the bail printed on your courtesy notice, San Joaquin County Superior Court charges an administrative fee, and the notice gives both amounts and your finish date. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid separately to the school. You need a valid California license and no traffic school assigned or attended in the last 18 months, and the charge must be an infraction rather than a misdemeanor, with no mandatory appearance required. The speed on a speeding ticket must be no more than 25 mph over the limit and no more than 100 mph, and some serious violations are excluded.
After the final exam, Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. If traffic school is not completed, the fines and fees you posted are forfeited. Before the date on your notice, make sure the court has your Tracy case with the right name and license number.
