Manteca roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Manteca.
The Census Bureau estimates 96,693 residents in Manteca on July 1, 2025. State Route 99 and State Route 120 both cross the city, and Manteca grew into a home for Bay Area commuters after the State Route 120 bypass was built. The corner of Main Street and Yosemite Avenue is where Joshua Cowell built houses after he founded the town in 1861.
Tickets in Manteca come from two agencies. The Manteca Police Department works the city streets, Yosemite Avenue and Main Street among them, and the California Highway Patrol's Stockton Area and Tracy Area serve San Joaquin County, including State Route 99 and State Route 120. Whichever agency writes the ticket, it goes to San Joaquin County Superior Court, and the court applies one set of traffic school rules to all of them.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 221 people killed or injured in Manteca crashes, 78th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Motorcycles stand out. The 28 people killed or injured in motorcycle crashes put Manteca 1st in its group. Speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 41, ranking 55th, and 17 pedestrians were killed or injured, 65th.
Manteca has two HAWK pedestrian signals, one at Main Street and Edison Street and one at Moffat Boulevard and Garfield Avenue. Each stays dark until a pedestrian presses the button, then shows flashing yellow, solid yellow and solid red. Once the two red lights flash in turn, treat the signal like a stop sign. Stop first, and go on only when the crosswalk is clear.
The city also runs the Manteca Traffic Calming Program, which aims to make neighborhoods safer by cutting traffic volumes and speeds through enforcement and physical changes to the street. Residents can ask for a street to be studied with the program's request form.
Adult traffic tickets from Manteca go to San Joaquin County Superior Court, which takes traffic cases at courthouses in Stockton, Manteca and Lodi. The Manteca Courthouse at 315 E. Center Street hears criminal and traffic cases, and its traffic line is (209) 239-1316. The DMV's court code list has one adult traffic code for the county, 39460, which belongs to the Stockton Courthouse, and no code for Manteca. If your notice names the Manteca Courthouse, call that line to confirm the code before you enroll.
Traffic school is something you ask the court for. The court charges an administrative fee on top of the bail shown on your courtesy notice, and the notice gives the amounts and the date to finish. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. San Joaquin County Superior Court asks for a valid California license, no traffic school assigned or attended in the last 18 months, and an infraction, not a misdemeanor, with no mandatory appearance. A speeding charge must be no more than 25 mph over the posted limit and no more than 100 mph, and some serious violations are excluded.
After you pass the final exam, Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. If traffic school is not completed, the court keeps all the fines and fees you posted, so check your Manteca case before the date on your notice and make sure your name and license number are right.
