Ripon roads, traffic enforcement and court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Ripon.

The Census Bureau estimates 16,140 residents in Ripon on July 1, 2025. The town was first called Stanislaus City and took the name of Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1876. Ripon began to grow quickly in 1998, when land north of the Golden State Freeway, State Route 99, was set aside for new housing. In 2003 the Jack Tone Road intersection was rebuilt, and commercial building there started with two truck stops.

Tickets in Ripon come from two agencies. The Ripon Police Department covers city streets such as Main Street and Jack Tone Road, and the California Highway Patrol's Stockton Area and Tracy Area serve San Joaquin County, State Route 99 included. Any of their tickets goes to San Joaquin County Superior Court, and the court's traffic school rules stay the same no matter who wrote it.

The police department's Traffic Enforcement Unit works on three things: educating drivers, using safety technology and enforcing the California Vehicle Code. Speeding, congestion and stop sign violations are the most common traffic complaints from residents, and the unit tracks them to decide where to enforce. It also joins countywide Selective Traffic Enforcement Program operations with neighboring agencies, and Ripon's patrol officers write traffic tickets as well.

The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 16 people killed or injured in Ripon crashes, 86th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. No pedestrians were killed or injured, and speed played a part in two crashes that killed or hurt someone, ranking 83rd. Hit-and-run was Ripon's weakest category, with 4 fatal or injury crashes ranking 32nd, and officers made 24 DUI arrests, 41st in the group.

Adult traffic tickets from Ripon go to San Joaquin County Superior Court. Ripon has no courthouse, and of the court's traffic courthouses in Stockton, Manteca and Lodi, the Manteca Courthouse at 315 E. Center Street is the closest. It hears criminal and traffic cases, and its traffic line is (209) 239-1316. The DMV's court code list gives the county one adult traffic code, 39460, which belongs to Stockton, and none to Manteca, so ask the Manteca line which code your case carries. Your citation and courtesy notice name the courthouse that has your case.

The request for traffic school goes to the court. San Joaquin County Superior Court charges an administrative fee along with the bail printed on your courtesy notice, and the notice gives the amounts and the date to finish. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99, paid to the school. The court's rules call for a valid California license, no traffic school assigned or attended in the last 18 months, and an infraction, not a misdemeanor, that needs no mandatory appearance. A speeding ticket for more than 25 mph over the limit or more than 100 mph does not qualify, and neither do some serious violations.

Once you pass the final exam, Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. An unfinished course costs you what you paid, because the court keeps the fines and fees posted when traffic school is not completed. Look up your Ripon case before the date on your notice and check that your name and license number match.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Ripon citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

San Joaquin County Superior Court. Its closest traffic courthouse to Ripon is the Manteca Courthouse at 315 E. Center Street, but Stockton and Lodi hear traffic too, so read the courthouse name on your citation. For a Manteca case, the traffic line at (209) 239-1316 can confirm the court code before you enroll.

Mirai Traffic School's online course is $24.99, final exam included. The bail and the administrative fee are owed to San Joaquin County Superior Court separately, as your courtesy notice shows, and paying for the course does not settle them. A course receipt shows you bought the course, not that the court granted traffic school.

The Office of Traffic Safety counts 16 people killed or injured in Ripon in 2023, 86th of 103 similar cities. No pedestrians were among them, and speed played a part in two crashes that killed or injured someone, 83rd. The 4 fatal or injury hit-and-run crashes ranked 32nd, Ripon's weakest ranking. These are citywide figures, not a finding about any one driver.

On the date San Joaquin County Superior Court sets, printed on your courtesy notice. If the notice never comes, perhaps because you moved, the court puts it on you to follow up for the amount and the due date, so do not wait for the mail.

Through the DMV. Mirai Traffic School reports your completion electronically in the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion system under license E0756, and San Joaquin County Superior Court retrieves it there. Save the confirmation with your Ripon citation number.

The Ripon Police Department on city streets, and the California Highway Patrol's Stockton Area and Tracy Area on State Route 99 and the county's other state highways. All of these tickets go to San Joaquin County Superior Court, and the traffic school rules are the same for each.
