Your reminder notice lists your options, and the court's traffic school page explains how Sutter County Superior Court grants traffic school. You pay the full bail and the court's nonrefundable traffic school fees before you attend, and the notice and the traffic school page show the amount. If the citation also has a fix-it item, the court must receive the correction with your fine and fees before it grants permission.

    The court rules out equipment and misdemeanor violations, a mandatory appearance, a violation worth more than one point, a tank vehicle, alcohol or drugs, and speeds more than 25 miles over a speed limit. A failure to appear on the case must be settled and paid first.

    You pay the court

    Pay the full bail and the court's traffic school fees before the course, as your reminder notice shows. Send any fix-it corrections with the payment, or the court will not grant traffic school.

    You finish a licensed course

    Your school sends the completion certificate to the court electronically. For a noncommercial license, one conviction in any 18 months, counted from the violation date, is held confidential and stays off your driving record. Come to the Traffic Division in person or call (530) 822-3303. If you were arrested and posted bail to appear, the clerk cannot change the date or time of the appearance.

By mail, return the reminder notice with the contest box checked and signed, along with the signed statement of rights. In person at the Traffic Division, you can set a trial date without paying the ticket first. The officer who wrote the citation will be at the trial. After a court trial, you can appeal on form CR-142, and the court says the appeal deadline cannot be extended.

The court gives you forms TR-200 and TR-205, which you return by the due date with full payment of the ticket. To keep traffic school open if the judge finds you guilty, include the traffic school fee as well. The officer submits form TR-235, and the court mails its decision on form TR-215. A not guilty finding brings a refund, and if you disagree with the decision, you can ask for a new trial on form TR-220.

An officer or other authority signs the back of the citation or reminder notice for each corrected item. For insurance you had but could not show, bring or mail your policy or card with the dates of coverage. Insurance bought after the ticket may lower that fine.

Registration, equipment and weight violations can fall on the registered owner, who gets a notice to appear by mail. Ignoring that notice can block the vehicle's registration renewal.

If you cannot pay the full fine for an infraction, you may ask the court to reduce it based on your ability to pay, through the request its traffic page links. If you take no action by the appearance date, the court adds a civil assessment unless you show good cause in writing. It may also find you guilty in your absence.
